Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, chaired an extensive meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to follow up on the progress of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) activities, conducted in collaboration with the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), United Kingdom.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the Ministry’s official spokesperson, explained that the meeting reviewed the National HTA Framework, which adopts a multidisciplinary methodology to assess the medical, economic, social, and ethical aspects of health technologies and pharmaceutical products, ensuring evidence-based decision-making and maximizing value from health expenditure while enhancing system efficiency.
He emphasized that HTA has become a fundamental pillar for healthcare sustainability, noting recent advancements in the methodology to incorporate comprehensive economic evaluation carried out in coordination with all relevant national entities. This integration ensures the adoption of the most effective and efficient medical technologies.
The Minister directed all concerned institutions to ensure full coordination, unify the national pathway for medical technologies, activate a transparent national framework that promotes equity in access to innovative medicines and technologies, harmonize assessment methodologies, and strengthen governance for optimal resource allocation and improved cost-effectiveness across the healthcare system.
The meeting was attended by senior leadership from the Egyptian Drug Authority, the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority, the General Authority for Universal Health Insurance, as well as officials from the Ministry’s Health Economics Unit, Central Departments of Medical Technology, Pharmacy, and Medical Technology Planning.
