UPA and the General Authority for Healthcare Launch Awareness Program “Choose Wisely” to Promote Rational Health Practices

The Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA), in collaboration with the General Authority for Healthcare (GAH), has launched a national awareness and training program titled “Choose Wisely.” The initiative aims to promote rational healthcare spending, raise awareness among medical professionals, and encourage effective and evidence-based clinical practices across Egypt’s healthcare system.

The first phase of the program was inaugurated at the Ismailia Medical Complex and will be gradually expanded to other governorates implementing the Universal Health Insurance System.

The program began with a series of educational lectures, the first of which was delivered by Major General Dr. Hany Hafez Lotfy, Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Armed Forces and the Military Medical Academy, and representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). His lecture, titled “Guidelines for Effective Diagnostic Radiology Practices,” focused on promoting sustainable and safe use of diagnostic imaging technologies across medical disciplines, ensuring high-quality and efficient healthcare delivery.

The “Choose Wisely” initiative was launched under the joint supervision of Dr. Nuran El-Dosouky, Head of the Health Economics Unit at the General Authority for Healthcare, and Dr. Amal Sedrak, Director General of Training and Community Awareness at the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority. The program is jointly coordinated by UPA’s Central Administration for Medical Technology and GAH’s Health Economics Unit.

This initiative forms part of Egypt’s broader vision to optimize healthcare resources, improve care quality, and enhance the knowledge and awareness of medical and technical personnel — in line with Egypt Vision 2030. It also reflects the ongoing partnership between UPA and GAH in advancing sustainable healthcare practices nationwide.

The “Choose Wisely” campaign is based on a global initiative that has been implemented in numerous countries, including Canada, Italy, Australia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Austria, Japan, New Zealand, Brazil, Israel, France, Norway, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia, all sharing the goal of reducing overuse of medical resources and promoting evidence-based care.
